I would strongly recommend you look at someplace with better summer weather, there are so many options: the Rocky Mountains (both US and Canadian), New England, Alaska…too many options to name.

Sept October can be peak foliage in many areas. Super worthy of a mini road trip but accommodations can be challenging given the popularity. Rural New Hampshire, Vermont, seacoast Maine those areas would be my focus. Now off you go to the Tripadvisor Road Trip forum or start with New Hampshire forum for example. Good luck!
