At the main Naples station, we followed the signs to the Circumvesuviana, which is a private railway. We bought tickets there for the trip to Pompeii. It took about 25 minutes (about 18 stops) and was about 4-5 euros each person, each way. The Pompeii Scavi station is only about 100 metres from the ruins.
