To scale an object to a smaller size, you simply divide each dimension by the required scale factor. For example, if you would like to apply a scale factor of 1:6 and the length of the item is 60 cm, you simply divide 60 / 6 = 10 cm to get the new dimension. For Global (3 axis) scaling you need to preset the shape/group by selecting a handle (and Shift/Option keys). Drag a bit to enter global scale mode and drag back to the original size. Let go of the handle and type (30%) in the field. Hit Enter/Return. FYI- you cannot use global scaling while the Ruler is in the Workspace.
