Thematically, do what you want. Mechanically, monk is probably the stronger base with stances, flurry, better AC, better saves, ki strike and super fast movement. Magus only offers spellstrike which is just ok, and bounded spellcasting sucks. Grab a spellcasting archetype with access to the arcane spell list.

We, including that player, had a lot of fun, though. As far as observations go, Magus is a bit of a one-trick pony. Spellstrike is the name of the game and you are doing anything to play it. As such, your action economy is very inflexible when you actually try to maximize Spellstrike usage, which seems like the goal.
