You won't encounter nearly as much resistance when the magazine is loaded, of course, and obviously if you remove the magazine, no problem. Likewise, if you retract the slight slightly and then depress the release, you won't have so much difficulty.

No matter how hard I push the slide release button down while pulling the slide to the rear it would not release with empty magazine inserted. Try working the action a hundred times, pulling on the slide to release just enough tension that your thumb can release the rest, and I think you'll feel a significant difference as it rounds itself off.
